I don't know if she was really trying to kiss him or not, but the way he backed away you would have thought that the Doberman down the street was trying to eat his face. Jarred's eyes were as big as silver dollars, his nose flared in and out of sync with the beat of his lips trembling, and his heart seemed to be racing like a fighter plane the way his face turned 3 shades of pink and red. I'm mean, she put her hand on his shoulder, while the other one was in his hand. Then, when he put his other hand on her waste and she moved the first hand to his other shoulder and started to leaned in.......................Animation for the last 50 years could have never produced a face as comical as Jarred's that night, at the 5th and 6th grade Fall Festival Dance.
That's right, they were dancing. It was earlier that week that Mrs. Beeterman personally asked Jarred to take her grand daughter Indigo to the dance. "Hey! It's your big chance to make your move Studley do-right." Stephen said. Jarred turned a little red and punched Stephen in the arm. And it was the exact spot that Elly punched him earlier that day so it was still sore. "I'd be happy to take Indigo to the dance, Mrs. Beeterman. My dad will be taking us, and we can stop by to pick Indigo up around 6:30 if that would be okay." Jarred said as proudly and bashfully as he could. His hands were getting a bit sweaty so he stuck 'em in his pockets. Then he said, "The dance is over at 9:00 so we should be back around......" "Midnight! That's okay, isn't it Mrs. Beeterman? " Stephen interjected with a devilish smile and a wink. "I'm trusting that you will be perfect Gentlemen." Mrs. Beeterman said to Jarred, then giving Stephen a non-responsive startling cold kind of stare. She held it there for what seemed like minutes, and then winked back. It even startled me, but then I had an itch and I lost the stare, so then I barked at the boys to snap them out of it.
Back at the dance, Indigo told Jarred that she was going to lay her head on his shoulder like she does with her dad when she dances at home. Jarred's whole body went from shocking stiff to relieved and relaxed. 'WHEW' he thought. Then he started to think about it a bit deeper 'Awe man, that could have been my first real kiss.' (not counting aunt Agnes, who even kisses me full on the mouth. With Bright RED lipstick. YEEEEEUUUUCK.) But now it was too late. 'I should've just puckered and took a chance.' He thought. Then in the middle of the song..............TAP TAP. "May I cut in?" Stephen asked. "NO!" Replied Jarred. "Where's your date Elly?" "She's been mis-steppin to the music and stepping on my toes for the last 30 minutes. She probably weighs 90 pounds but feels like an elephant with 4 left feet. I'm trying to hide. And besides that, I don't know where she got that perfume but I thought I was gonna blow my dinner on her dress from the smell." Stephen answered. Then, out of pity or maybe she was tired of Jarred's hand feeling like he was either drying his clammy hand or feeling around her back to see if she was wearing a bra yet, Indigo let go of Jarred and stepped over to Stephen for a couple of songs. Reluctantly, but necessary, Jarred went to the boy's room to wipe the sweat from around his face and neck. Several times he asked if Indigo thought that it was a bit hot in the gym.
The night ended with Mr. Crow pulling up the drive to drop off Indy, Jarred walking her up to the front porch, and Mrs. Beeterman meeting them at the door and giving Jarred a big kiss on the cheek. When he got back to the car, Mr. Crow and Stephen were giggling under there breath. "What?!?" Jarred asked. Mr. Crow and Stephen just looked at each other and laughed. "Guess I had to be there." Jarred said. Then the giggling continued for a few more seconds.
The boys got back to the Crow's house, changed out of their suits and ties, and helped themselves to a plate of cookies that Mrs. Crow claimed a few of "the BOB's"girls had made. "That talk I had with them, must have finally sunk in." She said to Mr. Crow. The boys just giggled and headed out to the tree house. "You just remember that the lawn needs mowed tomorrow young man." Mr. Crow said. "Okay dad."
Henry, has left the building.
Stephen was over on the boys side of the gymnasium, acting like he hadn't yet seen Elly on the girls side. And me?!? Well I was stuck outside, as usual, looking in from the bottom pane of glass in the door. I wanted to dance, but you know humans. Self absorbed bozos. Always leave the dog out of the fun activities. Do I get invited in to play games at the arcade? NoooOOOOOooooo. Do I get to play baseball on Saturday afternoons? NooooooOOOOOOooo. Do I get to have any fun at all?!? NO.....oh wait? I did steal the ball that one day and ran the bases. And I do get to go skinny dipping sometimes..........well sorta. And I do get to go around and wake everyone up with my super soaker kisses. Okay, my pity party is over. Back to the story.
